Although I enjoy creating art in a variety of mediums, lately I find myself being consistently drawn towards two-dimensional methods such as Painting and Digital Media. I have always loved working in layers and I enjoy having the freedom to express myself through color. Both mediums allow me to do that as I devise domestic compositions that are both visually and conceptually interesting to the viewer.

When I work in layers, my goal is to alter and emphasize perspective in a way that is recognizable yet thought-provoking to the viewer. The viewer should be able to look at a piece and want to consider each and every part that makes up the whole. I purposely manipulate space by allowing some objects to carry heavy detail while others consist of only fine or simplistic lines. This works formally by creating a contrast within the composition. As for color, I create compositions out of pastels and muted variations of colors. I have found that muted colors are often times more beautiful than their vibrant counterparts. They act as a reflection of the simplicity many interior spaces are constructed from and they also make something that could be considered an ordinarily mundane object more appealing.

Conceptually, I find the simplistic lines and shapes of houses and interiors fascinating. When I create a composition, I envision another human being both inside the canvas and out. The interaction within the piece is just as important as the viewer’s interaction with the canvas itself. Whether there is a figure in the composition or not, I ask myself: How would a presence interact with the objects in this room? What can I do to create a presence in a room that would seem otherwise solitary? I then use a combination of visual cues in each piece to suggest the interactions occurring within it. I want the viewer to examine the composition and see more than what is routine.
